JARROW

Bramley, T., Spr., 1917
In Varennes Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1064 Sapper Thomas Branley, serving with the Royal Engineers who died 13/01/1917.

Peter Hoy of James Hoy Archives has provided the following (his ref. is 756):

He was the eldest son of William and Ann (Annie) Bramley (née Evans) of 48 Albert Road, Jarrow (in 1911) and 22 Borough Road, Jarrow (in 1917).

His father, William, was born in Jarrow and was a 42-year old master butcher (shopkeeper) in 1911. He died on 6 August 1932, aged 63. His mother, Ann, was born in Jarrow and was 41. They had then been married for 19 years and had had six children, all still living.

Siblings (1911 ages; all born in Jarrow): Eleanor (15), William (11 – He died on 20 November 1966), Charles Heywood (9), Leslie (4) and Lily (2).

Thomas was born in Jarrow (South Shields – December quarter 1894). He attended Croft Terrace School. Before the war he was employed as a junior clerk in a stockbrokers in 1911. He arrived in France on 18 September 1915 (1914-5 Star).

Thomas Bramley is remembered at Jarrow on J2.22 and J2.39
