Death recorded BMD Deaths Dec 1943. Joseph Welsh age 22 Downham 4b 415

Sgt. Welsh was serving with 626 Squadron. He was a crew member of Lancaster I DV295 UM-M2 which took off from Wickenby on a mission to Berlin. The aircraft crashed on return, killing all the crew.

This was a night of 26/27 November 1943 which saw 56 aircraft crashing, mostly Lancasters, with a crew of 7 in each. Some were injured, some were taken prisoner but most, approx. 350, died.
