In Holy Trinity Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of George
beloved husband of
Isabel Corner
who died from war wounds
Dec. 15th 1929 aged 37 years
A hero of the Great War.

There is no CWGC entry for Mr. Corner as he died in 1929.

Durham Chronicle 20/12/1929 reads:-

Mr George Corner 37 of Wingate who was invalided out of the Army in October 1918 after having been severely wounded was buried at Wingate on Wednesday. Deceased who was a native of Castle Eden joined up in 1914. Work as a postman was found for him but he has been unable to follow his employment for some time. Many ex-servicemen followed the cortege to the churchyard.
