Burdess, T., Pte., 1916

In Harrogate (Stonefall) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 19/1790 Private Thomas Burdess, serving with the 19th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 15/03/1916.

Thomas was born in Murton Colliery, son of John Burdess, of 7 Lancaster Street, Murton, Durham, and his wife Jane, daughter of James Colledge.

He was educated at Murton Boys School, and was employed in farming. He married on the 15th August 1914, at Easington, Elizabeth, 71 Third Street, Horden, daughter of Robert Oliver.

Thomas volunteered and enlisted on the 22nd July 1915, but died in hospital after an operation at Harrogate, 15th March 1916. He had only been stationed there a few weeks.
