MURTON

Hope, W., Pte., 1918

In Giavera British Cemetery Arcade, Italy is the Commonwealth War Grave of 33174 Private William Hope serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 22/02/1918.

William was the eldest son of William Simon and Ruth Hope of Ryhope, late of Murton. He had been born at Usworth c1885 and his parents went on to have another ten children -three of whom were dead by 1911.

In 1911 the family were living at 14 Shipperdson Street Murton and William is a labourer at the colliery.

William enlisted in 1915 when the family had moved to 7 Alice Street Ryhope. He joined the 12th Battalion of the D.L.I.

He embarked from Folkestone 15th September 1916. William died from pneumonia at the 71st Field Ambulance in Italy 22nd February 1918.

William Hope is remembered at Murton on M47.01, M47.06, M47.09 M47.12 and at Ryhope R52.01
