Joe Newton has submitted the following about his great uncle:-
Robert Newton was born c1897 at Haswell the son of William and Frances (nee Donkin). William was a coal miner. In 1901 the family had moved to Hetton le Hole and by 1911 they are at 12 Villiers Street Murton Colliery. Robert aged 13 was still at school.
Robert enlisted at Seaham Harbour on the 11th December 1915. He joined the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was a miner aged 18 years and four months.
Robert was not called up until 21st April 1918. By this time he was a putter, had married Rose Ann Ward 5th February 1917 and was father to Mary. They were living at Lowless House, Church Street Murton.
Robert is described as 5 foot 8 inches tall, brown hair blue eyes and a fair complexion. He weighed 139 pounds. After training Robert went to France on the 3rd October 1918 and was killed in action 20 days later.
Robert is remembered at Murton on M47.01, M47.02, M47.06, M47.09 and M47.10
