Halliday, John, Presentation, 1920

Auckland & County Gazette 08/04/1920

Auckland and County Chronicle 08/04/1920 reports:

Murton Colliery presentations.

A “smoker” was held at the Democratic Social Club, Murton, on Thursday, under the auspices of the Murton Branch of the Mechanics’ Association. Mr. M. Harper presided over a large attendance. During the evening Mr. Geo. Watkin, on behalf of the members and friends, presented to Mr. John Halliday a travelling nag and silver cigarette case, inscribed, on his leaving Murton for Canada. Previous to the outbreak of war Mr. Halliday worked at Murton and, being an old naval reservist, was called up on 10 August 1914. A few days later he set sail on the Venerable Bede to defend the Belgian coast. He was demobilised in November 1919, after a service of five years. The recipient responded and assured them that he would always treasure their gifts.

John Halliday is remembered at Murton on M47.05
