Stewart, A.H., Pte., 1914-18 (1917)

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

Alexander Hanlon Stewart was born at Glasgow, County Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1863 where he married Maria Jane Whiteside born 1868, also of Glasgow. They had 8 children together of whom only 7 survived, sons William Stewart (1884), Alexander (1885) daughters Margaret (1894), Marie (1897) and sons Oliver (1899) and Thomas (1901) were all born at Milton, Glasgow. His wife was living at 13, Keyden Street, Kinning Park Landward, Glasgow with their children in 1901, Alexander is not listed with them and was probably away from home in search of work as between 1901 and 1906 they moved to Stillington, County Durham where son Arthur was born in 1906. In 1911 Alexander was working at Blacking Mill as foreman, son Willie (27) also, whilst the remainder of his children with the exception of Alexander Jnr were scholars and living at 49, Lowson Street, Carlton Iron Works, Stillington. Alexander Jnr newly married to Sarah Jane Shaw in 1910 was living at 15, North Street, Carlton Iron Works, Stillington.

Alexander Halon Stewart despite his advanced years served during WW1, exact details unknown and died, “at home” in England, February 9th 1917.

He is buried at St. John The Devine, Stillington, County Durham as is his wife Maria Jane Stewart nee Whiteside who died aged 79 years, March 10th 1941, also buried within the churchyard is their son Alexander who died aged 71 years March 11th 1962 and his wife Sarah Jane Stewart nee Shaw, aged 81 years who died March 23rd 1967.

There is no entry for Alexander Hanlon Stewart with the CWGC.
