The son of Charles and Susannah Brogden of Thornaby-on-Tees, he was born at Thornaby. Enlisting at Middlesbrough, he died of wounds on the 22nd March 1918 aged 35. He was the husband of Jane Brogden of 72 Stanley Street, Norton, Stockton-on-Tees. He is buried in Bac-Du-Sud British Cemetery, Bailleulval, Pas de Calais, France, Grave Reference I.A.19. His name appears in the Book of Remembrance at Stockton Parish Church, Stockton-on-Tees.
