Sgt. Stone was killed when Handley Page Halifax II W7932 of 78 Squadron was lost on a mission to Dusseldorf. The Halifax was shot down by a Luftwaffe night fighter flown by Maj. Werner Streib of 1./NJG1, and crashed at 02.22 on farmland near Sambeek, with the loss of all seven crew members.
