Lumley, G.E., F/Off., M.i.D., 1944
In Darlington West Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 171707 Flying Officer George Edward Lumley, serving with the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve, Mentioned in Despatches, who died 16/09/1944.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

F/O Lumley was killed when Vickers Wellington X HF179 of 6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit ditched in the Irish Sea off St. Bees Head during a training exercise. The Wellington was conducting Leigh Light homing practice, and struck the sea, with the loss of four of the crew.

One of the survivors, 171365 F/O F. J. Jordan, recorded the following in his R.A.F. log book:

"L.L. Homings - Crashed in Irish Sea - 5 miles West St. Bees Head - 4 crew killed. Picked up by S.S. Green Isle and taken to Whitehaven Infirmary - No dinghy seen." He suffered two broken ankles, a broken arm and cracked ribs.
