In Billingham (St. Cuthbert) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1061727 Sergeant George Horton, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 01/04/1942.

Son of George and Isobel Horton; husband of Mary Elizabeth Horton, of Billingham.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
Sergt. George Horton
R.A.F.V.R.
Killed in action April 1st 1942
Aged 29 years

Sgt. Horton was killed when Lockheed Hudson III AE558 of 1428 (Hudson Conversion) Flight was lost on a training flight. The Hudson crashed during a nigh cross country exercise, coming down at 22.35 near Biggleswade, with the loss of all four crew members.
