F/Sgt Freshwater was killed when Handley Page Halifax III NA114 ZA-K of 10 Squadron was lost on a mission to Hanover. The Halifax was shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter, crashing some 7 miles north of Detmold with the loss of all eight crew members.
