Anderson, G.H., L/Cpl., 1915

In Sunderland Mere Knolls Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 8924 Lance Corporal George Henry Anderson , serving with the York & Lancaster Regiment who died 11/09/1915.

The family headstone reads:

In memory of
Sergt. G. H. Anderson
Y. & L. Regt.
aged 26 years
who was drowned
whilst attempting
to save the life of
J. W. Oliver
aged 13 years
and 11 months
at Roker
Sept. 11th 1915.

Erected
by public subscription
at Fulwell
to commemorate
a gallant action.

Extract from the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal Citations taken from the Annual Report for 1915:.

Jennings, Roland. Case 42029; on the 12th September 1915, a lad while bathing in the sea at Roker was swept out 60 yards by the current. Lance. Corpl. G H Anderson, York and Lancaster Regt., went to his help but got into difficulty and was drowned. Jennings then swam out and caught him but could not bring him in and he also was drowned. "In Memoriam" to relatives of Anderson.

Soldiers Died in the Great War reports that George Henry Anderson was born in Dublin, enlisted in Bedford and lived at Plumstead, Kent.

G. H. Anderson is not remembered on a local war memorial.
