On the Helles Memorial is the name of 21021 Private Joseph Cooper Robertson, serving with the 9th (Service) Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers who died 21/08/1915.

Joseph Cooper Robinson was born on the 28th November 1889 at Monkwearmouth, Durham, youngest son of John Robinson, of Sunderland, a Driller in a Sunderland Shipyard, who died in 1895, and his wife Margaret, of 13 Brougham Street, Southwick-on-Wear, daughter of Michael Hedley of Sunderland.

Joseph was educated at the Board School in Southwick. He was employed in the Sunderland Bottle Works.

He enlisted on the 24th August 1914, and was trained at Grantham.

He was killed in action at Chocolate Hill, Gallipoli on the 21st August 1915. He was unmarried. The same day his great friend and school fellow G Hepinstall, with whom ho had been brought up, enlisted and gone to the front, was killed some distance away.
