Eltringham family 1914-18
Amanda Evans has sent in the stories of her great uncles and how they fared in the Great War.

This is the family of Joseph Eltringham and Margaret Eltringham. Joseph was a hewer at Ryhope Colliery, Joseph and Margaret had 13 children in total and all were born in Ryhope. All the older boys worked in Ryhope colliery before enlisting.

Henry Eltringham was the brother of my grandmother Margaret Eltringham. He was born in 1895 in Ryhope and at the age of 16 he lived at 14 Logan Street, Langley Park, and worked underground as a coal miner pony driver.

This is a picture of Henry in his uniform before he left for war.He enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment in July 15 1915, his service number was 13097. He was killed in action on April 11th 1918. His name is on the Ploegsteert memorial comines-warneton, Belgium, panel 4.

He is remembered on L64.01 and L64.02

Joseph Eltringham was born in 1886. He enlisted with the Yorkshire Regiment on July 13th 1915 and was given the service number 14493. He died of his injuries on Sept 21st 1917 and was buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Ieper (Ypres) Belgium, plot X.F.22.

He is remembered on R52.01

William Eltringham was born in 1892. He enlisted with the Yorkshire Regiment on September 3rd 1914, service number 14704.

Stephen Eltringham was born in 1890. He enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry on May 15th 1915 and was discharged December 17th 1918 due to left leg amputation.
