Middleton, M., Tpr., 1916
In Quarry Cemetery, Vermelles is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1635 Trooper Matthew Middleton, serving with the Royal Horse Guards, (The Blues) who died 23/01/1916.

Matthew Middleton was born on the 12th November 1884, at Ryhope, Sunderland, son of Margaret Ann Middleton of Tunstall Street, Ryhope, Sunderland.

He was a police constable and had enlisted on the 4th September 1914.

He was unmarried.

Matthew was killed in action on the 23rd January 1916.

He is remembered at Ryhope on R52.01 and in Sunderland in S140.48 Part 11, page 235
