Mere Knolls Cemetery

In Mere Knolls Cemetery is a square polished gray granite monument surmounted by a draped urn, the work of Messrs Borrowdale Brothers which reads:-

Erected
By the
Citizens of Sunderland
To the memory of
Thomas Shepherd Dale
In appreciation of his inflexible
Purpose, integrity and stirling
Work as trades union leader
Magistrate and administrator
And of the sacrifice he
Courageously made in the
Nation's interest, culminating
In his untimely death whilst
In the performance of his duty
In charge of the Monkwearmouth
Special constables April 1st 1916
Aged 56 years
For thou wert strong as thou wert true

wife of the above
Who died June 5th 1940
aged 79 years

The Sunderland Echo 01/10/1917 reports the unveiling on Saturday (29/09/1917) by 2nd Lieut. Frank W. Goldstone, M.P. A.S.C. in the presence of a large gathering of relatives, friends and representatives of the public generally.

The Newcastle Weekly Chronicle 06/10/1917 also reported the unveiling of a memorial stone erected by public subscription to the memory of the late Mr. T.S. Dale.

Mr. Dale was a leader of the Sunderland Labour Party and a Justice of the Peace. He was also a Special Constable and was killed whilst on duty during the Zeppelin raid on Sunderland on April 1st 1916.

Thomas Shepherd Dale is remembered at Monkwearmouth on M36.42 and on the Police Force Memorial Trust web site.
