In Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 22/1426 Private George Richardson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 29/03/1916.

George Richardson was born at Monkwearmouth on the 30th May 1875, son of William Richardson of Monkwearmouth, Master Mariner (lost at sea), and his wife Harriet, daughter of William Healia.

George was educated at the Monkwearmouth Colliery School, and was later employed at the Hylton Colliery.

He married at Sunderland on the 30th August 1902, Sarah Jane of 5 Varna Street, Southwick-on-Wear, Sunderland, first daughter of Joseph Gray of Sunderland. They had five children Catherine born 8th May 1904, Thomas born 22nd May 1906, George born 10th December 1910, Joseph born 2nd February 1914, and Gladys born 25th January 1916.

George enlisted on the 1st January 1915, in to the 3rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, but was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. George was killed 'somewhere' in France in action.
