Atcheson, J., Pte., 1915

On Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 3/9474 Private John Atcheson, serving with the 2nd Battalion, (106th Foot) Durham Light Infantry who died 01/06/1915.

John was the second son of Hugh Atcheson of Jarrow, and his wife Mary (Carley Place, Southwick, Sunderland). He was born 24th May 1894 and was educated at St Benet's Sunderland.

John had enlisted in October 1910, and after serving his time with the colours joined the Special Reserve.

He was employed at Thomson's Yard, Sunderland.

John was called up on mobilisation on the 5th Aug 1914.

He was killed in action at Ypres 1st June 1915.

[There was a listening post about 15 yards away from the Germans, covering the front of some houses along the Ypres - Zonnenbeeke road, it was here that Atcheson was killed, either by Shellfire or by rifle fire, 6 men and an officer got killed and over 15 men wounded.]

His elder brother Pte. Samuel Atcheson was serving with the Expeditionary Force in France.
