P/Off. Bryan-Smith was with 49 Squadron and a crew member of Hampden I L4043 EA- which flew on Gardening operation. The aircraft took off from Scampton but ran out of fuel and crash landed on the beach near Ryhope. P/Off Bryan-Smith was the sole fatality.
