Peter Wise, Dorothy Hall and Brenda McMahon have submitted the following:-

David, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Elliott was born in Newcastle on 14th February 1886. In 1891 the family were living at Pawton Dene Terrace Shieldfield. In April 1893 David was enrolled at Shieldfield School. He remained there till 30th April 1899.

By the time of the 1901 Census David was an inmate of the North East Reformatory School at Netherton, Stannington, aged 15 years. He was a stone dresser and builder. His parents Richard, Cartman, Elizabeth and family remained in Newcastle.

By 1911 David Elliott was lodging at 11 Wood Street Barnard Castle, working as a stone mason and described as being “away from home”.

David enlisted into the Royal Engineers with service number 7509 later 397509. He went to France on November 25th 1915. In November 1917 the Teesdale Mercury records Sapper D Elliott of the Royal Engineers as being on leave from the front.

The WW1 Pension cards state David was discharged 10th March 1919 to 29 Thorngate Barnard Castle.

David died at Sedgefield 31st May 1921 of General Paralysis of the Insane, so presumably he was an inmate of Winterton Hospital. His sister Margaret Elsden of 19 Thorngate and later of Doncaster was named as his next of kin.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

There is no CWGC entry for David.
