Alfred the son of George and Frances Mary (nee Walker) was born in Teesdale in 1897. He was baptised on 3rd October 1897. The couple had married in 1893 and went on to have three children namely George, Alfred and later a daughter Edith.

The 1901 census shows the family living at Balliol Street together with parents, brother George and a boarder. His father was a house painter by trade.

The family remained at Balliol Street for some time. By 1911 a daughter, Edith, added to the household. His brother, George was a blacksmith’s apprentice although Alfred was still at school where he acquired the nickname “Curly”.

No service records are available at this time for Alfred except to report he died on January 23rd 1918 as a result of accidental injuries. He is buried alongside almost 2500 of his comrades.
