The Teesdale Mercury 05/12/1917 reports:-
Mr Thomas Errington of Bank House, Loftus in Cleveland, brother of Messrs John and William Errington of Brignal, received official news from the War Office, on the 27th November, that his son, Private John Birkett Errington, H.A.C., was killed in action near Ypres on the 9th of October. He was previously reported as missing. The deceased was born in 1898 and was educated at the North Eastern County School, Barnard Castle where he was very successful as a student and athlete. On leaving school in 1914 he joined the staff of the National Provincial Bank of England at Middlesbrough. After applying to get into the Fling Corps but just too late he volunteered for the H.A.C. and went with his company to France on June this year.
