In Hanover War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1049079 Sergeant William Thomas Smith, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 27/09/1943.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Sgt Walker was the Flight Engineer aboard Avro Lancaster III EE189 VN-S of 50 Squadron, which was lost on a mission to Hanover. The Lancaster crashed at Grosse Forste, near Hildesheim, with the loss of six of the seven crew members.

He is remembered at Barnard Castle on B135.22
