BARNARD CASTLE

Lee, H., Sgt., M.S.M., Crimea (1913)
The Darlington & Stockton Times 07/10/1922 reports:

"A Teesdale Warrior
A marble headstone has just been erected in St. Mary's Cemetery, Barnard Castle, to mark the spot where the remains of the late Sergt. Lee repose. The inscription runs: 'In memory of Henry Lee, M.S.M., late Sergeant 68th Light Infantry, died July 6th 1913, aged 93. Erected by his regiment to the memory of an old comrade who served with great distinction in the Crimean and New Zealand wars.'

The deceased, born March 25th 1820, at Rugby, Warwickshire, enlisted on June 5th 1854, in the 68th Light Infantry. Landing in Malta on July 24th that year, he took part in the Crimean war, and had engagements at Sebastopol, Inkerman, Balaclava and Alma, being awarded the Crimean and Turkish medals, with four clasps. The gallant warrior was only slightly wounded on one or two occasions, and returned to England on September 20th 1857. After further active service in Rangoon, Burmah, and in the New Zealand encounter, Sergt. Lee spent some time in east India and finally returned to England to be discharged on the termination of his second period of limited engagement in 1875. He was awarded the long service and good conduct medals, while he also possessed King Edward's meritorious medal, and secured a gratuity of £10 per annum extra pension.

Sergt.Lee spent a good many years of his life in Barnard Castle, where he made numerous acquaintances, and frequently entertained them with his thrilling experiences abroad. He took up poultry-keeping as a hobby, and was a keen trout angler. A period of 17 years was occupied in looking after the Mechanics' Institute, he and his wife being appointed caretakers. Mrs. Lee, who is 84, still enjoys wonderfully good health and activity.

The monument is a fitting tribute to a worthy and respected soldier and citizen, thanks to the energy and fellow feeling of Capt. Higginbotham, who served in the same regiment. The latter has been instrumental in obtaining the headstone from the regiment, which has been erected by Mr. John Appleby."
