The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 04/06/1920 reports:-

Death of a Young Pelton Soldier

Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs James Towers of 5 Gretta Street, Pelton Lane Ends, in the loss they have sustained by the death of their only son, Sidney, at the early age of 18 years and 8 months. Young Towers joined the Army Service Corps last January and subsequently was drafted to Egypt. He was invalided home, and when he landed at Southampton on Tuesday of last week was very weak and exhausted after the voyage. he never recovered and died on Saturday in hospital. No details of his illness have been vouch-saved by the authorities to the grief stricken father and mother. The body was brought to Pelton Lane Ends on Monday for internment in Pelton cemetery. The burial took place yesterday afternoon with military honours

Sidney died at Netley Hospital of Phthises (tuberculosis).

In 1911 Joseph Sidney Towers West is living at Pine Street, Grange Villa with his aunt and uncle James and Sarah Ann nee West, Towers.

Sidney is buried at Pelton with George West who died in 1921 aged 55 years, Sarah Ann Towers' brother.

Sidney Towers is not remembered on any local memorial.
