“Motor-bus accident at Chester-le-Street.
Two persons injured.
A motor-‘bus accident, which resulted in two persons being somewhat severely injured, occurred at Chester-le-Street shortly after none o’clock on Saturday night. A motor-‘bus belonging to the Northern General Transport Company was proceeding through the town in a northerly direction when, from some unexplained cause, it suddenly skidded from the left to the right side of the road and across a very broad footpath.
In its path were standing a group of people, including two soldiers and two young women, and two of them were injured. These were Driver Eddy, R.F.A., who was staying at Ouston on leave over the weekend, both of whose legs were hurt, and who was taken to the First North General Hospital, Newcastle; and the young woman, Rose Cook, living at Sacriston, who had her left leg injured. Both were attended by Dr. McKellar, and the girl was afterwards conveyed to her home by the company”.
The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 11/2/1916 reports the same story, but gives his name as Driver John Eddy, serving with the Northumbrian R.F.A., and that he suffered an ankle fracture and two bones broken in the same foot.
