In Birtley New Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 755521 Flight Sergeant William Harrison, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 03/08/1941.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
William Harrison
Died 3rd August 1941 aged 29 years

Till the dawn breaks

Sgt. Harrison was serving with 25 Operational Training Unit. He was a crew member of Wellington IC X3177 which took off from Finningley on a night training exercise, and flew into the ground in Nottinghamshire.
