Cowell, J.R., Pte., 1945
In Durnback War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4451455 Private Joseph Robert Cowell, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 12/04/1945.

The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 28/06/1940 reports that Mrs. Cowell (nee Armstrong) of 291 Gilsland Crescent, had received word that her husband, Pte. Robert Cowell, was missing, last seen at Warlecs, Belgium. She received this word on the anniversary of their wedding.

He was 23 years of age and had previously worked at Kibblesworth Colliery, where his father, William Cowell, was Chairman of the Miners’ Lodge for many years.There was a small daughter whom he had never seen.
