The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 28/06/1940 reports the death of Private Frank Leslie Bowater, who was killed on the beach at Dunkirk on June 1st, 1940. His mother lived at 2½ Frank Place, Birtley. He was 20 years of age. He joined the Territorial Army in April 1939 and went to France in January, 1940. He had previously worked at Powell’s Preserve Works, Low Fell.
