In Birtley New Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 836856 Gunner Thomas Nicholson, serving with the Royal Artillery who died 24/10/1946.

The headstone reads:-

Treasured memories of
Thomas beloved husband of Cathie Nicholson died 24th October 1946 aged 30 years (kerb stone)
Kate beloved wife of Martin Brabban died April 19th 1954
Also beloved husband Martin died ??? 1955 (kerb stones)

Thomas is not remembered on any local memorial.
