The Heslop's Local Advertiser 20/07/1917 reports that Sergt. J. Askew of Windy Nook has been awarded the Military Medal.

Heslop's Weekly Advertiser 24/08/1917 reports the presentation of a medal and gold watch to former employees of Heworth Colliery who had gained distinctions.

Among these was Sgt. Joseph Askew, 13th D.L.I., who had been awarded the Military Medal.
