Whitfield, W.C., L/Smn., 1916
In Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/1188 Leading Seaman William Creighton Whitfield, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 13/11/1916.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

William was born on 6th October 1891. He was working as a miner, living with his mother, Mary Ann, at Laughton Dene, Beech Grove, Whickham, when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 9th November 1914.

He was posted to the Hawke Battalion on 20th February 1915 and was hospitalised with Debility on 11th June 1915.

After rejoining the Hawke Battalion on 13th July 1915 William was hospitalised again on 10th August 1915 suffering from Epilepsy.

William rejoined the Hawke Battalion on 25th October 1915 and was killed in action on 13th November 1916.

William was the younger brother of James Henderson Whitfield who died of wounds on 3rd May 1915.

William Creighton Whitfield is remembered in Whickham on W86.01, W86.03 and W86.05
