Frederick was born in Scotswood, Newcastle in 1890, the son of Edward Finlay, of Swalwell, Durham, and his wife.
He married on the 7th February 1914, at Gateshead, Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Somerville. They had one child, John Somerville born in Blaydon, 19th February 1913.
Frederick enlisted on the 10th August 1909, and was killed at Ypres 18th October 1914.
