In Ryton Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 4459691 Sapper John Thomas Dixon serving with the 184 Field Company Royal Engineers who died 23/12/1943.

The headstone reads:-

of
Mary
beloved wife of John Thos. Dixon
died June 2nd 1943 aged 24 years
Also John Thomas
beloved husband of the above
Sapper R.E. who was killed in action
Dec. 23rd 1943 aged 26 years

Newcastle Evening Chronicle 30/12/1943 reports:-

Crookhill sapper’s death A interment took place at Ryton Cemetery to-day Sapper John Thomas Dixon (26). R.E. son of Mrs. Dixon, of 100 Tyne Gardens, Crookhill. His wife died six months ago. He had been four years in the Army and was killed by an explosion.
