In Ryton Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 273089 Private G.M. Harbottle serving with the 1st/9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 18/05/1917.

The headstone reads:-

Pt. Guy Murray
Harbottle
9th D.L.I.
Youngest and dearly beloved son of
Martha and the late William Harbottle
of Ryton who died on May 18th 1917
from wounds received in France
Aged 25 years
