A Butcher he was born at Ryton, County Durham and was Initiated into 339 George Stephenson Lodge at The Institute, Wylam on Tyne on the 11th February 1914; Passed 7th April 1914 and Raised on the 13th May 1914. Enlisting at Blaydon, County Durham he was killed in action on the 26th September 1918 aged 27. He is buried in Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, Nord, France, Grave Reference VIII.E.6.

He is remembered at Ryton on R33.01 and R33.05
