In St. Sever Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 20/140 Sergeant Thomas Richardson Barnes serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 13/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Thomas Richardson Barnes was born in 1874 at North Shields, registered at Tynemouth Northumberland. He was the son of Richard Barnes from Barnard Castle, County Durham, and Dorothy Barnes from Grinton in Yorkshire.

In 1881, when Thomas was 6 years old, he was living at Hylton Stables Tynemouth with his family. In the house at this time were siblings John 11, Mary 8, Meggie 3 and Sarah aged 3. His father’s occupation is described as ‘gardener domestic service’.

Thomas was not located in the 1891 Census when he would have been 16.

The 1901 Census shows Thomas as being married to Emma Rosina and living at St Mary’s Terrace, Ryton, County Durham, where he was employed as house painter, aged 26. His wife was from Newcastle and they had a son Henry who was 6 months old.

By 1911, Thomas was 36 and his family was living at 7, St Mary’s Terrace, Ryton in 4 rooms. His employment is shown as a ‘house painter and paper hanger’ and he had been married for 13 years.

Military records confirm he enlisted at Newcastle, was born at North Shields and died of wounds. His effects went to his Emma who was still a widow. Additional information in the CWGC documents show he was son of the late Richard and Dorothy Barnes of Oakfield Cottage, Ryton-on-Tyne and husband of Emma Rosina Barnes of St Mary’s Terrace, Ryton-on-Tyne.

Thomas Richardson Barnes is remembered in Ryton on R33.01 and R33.08
