In Ryton Holy Cross Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:-

In memory
of
Elizabeth Thompson
wife of James Thompson
who died Nov. 29th 1858
aged 67 years
the above James Thompson
died Dec. 2nd 1858 aged 87 years
he was in the Navy and lost
an arm in the defence of his
country at Trafalgar
