Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Alice was probably born at Kibblesworth on the 4th March 1920. She was the daughter of George and Catherine nee Dunn Wilkinson of 1 High Blue Road Kibblesworth. Her siblings included George born 1912, Kathleen born 1924, Eleanor born 1927 and John J. born 1931.

In 1939 there was an Alice Wilkinson working as domestic servant at Wellwood, Low Fell the the home of Swinburn W Newton and his wife Isabell.

During WW2 Alice enlisted into the Women’s Service where she remained throughout her war service.

According to an article in the Evening Chronicle 07/08/1945 Alice died whilst on active service on Wednesday 1st August 1945 at the early age of 25 years. The article under the heading Roll of Honour ‘Kibblesworth A.T.S. Heroine’ gives no information about the circumstances surrounding Alice’s death.

Alice was buried in Lamesley (St. Andrew’s) Churchyard and her family placed kerbstones round the grave. However, in the 1980s her exact place of burial could not be found so the Commonwealth Graves Commission put a special memorial saying ‘buried elsewhere in this churchyard’

Alice Wilkinson is remembered at Kibblesworth on K23.02
