In Gateshead (St.John's) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 952598 Sergeant (Wireless Op./Air Gunner) George Bolton serving with the 78 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 31/05/1942.

The headstone reads:-

Per ardua ad astra.
In loving memory of
George Bolton W/Op Air Gunner
(The rest is obscured by grass)

Sgt. Bolton was serving with 78 Squadron. He was a crew member of Halifax II W1013 EY- which took off from Croft on a mission to Cologne. The aircraft collided with another in Cambridgeshire. Two crew were killed and three injured.
