Clark, J., Pte., 1917
On the Arras Memorial is the name of 200901 Private John Clark, serving with 1st/5th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 21/04/1917.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:

John was the son of George and Mary Ann Clark. He was born at West Cornforth, Co. Durham in 1897. John lived with his parents and brother, George, mainly in the Ferry Hill area. There had been 2 other children born to the family who died.

His father worked as a coal miner/hewer whilst John (at the age of 14) as a surface labourer in the colliery. At the time of their son’s death the couple were living at 23 Moore Street, Gateshead.

He was killed in action in France aged 20 years. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial at Faubourg-D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras.

He is remembered in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance
