Hendrie, L.G., Capt., M.C. & Bar, married 1922
The Newcastle Daily Courant 20/05/1922 reports:

Gateshead Officer’s Wedding in West Africa.

The wedding is announced in our advertising columns of Capt. H.G. Hendrie, M.C., to Dr. Helen McDougall, at Seccondee, Gold Coast, West Africa.

The bride, who is the daughter of the late Rev. Duncan McDougall, of Oa, Islay, Argyllshire, graduated from Edinburgh University in 1915, and served with the Scottish Women’s Hospitals in Serbia, where, along with Dr. Elsie Inglis and others, she was taken prisoner during the Serbian retreat in November, 1915.

After release, Dr. McDougall served in France until the Armistice. In addition to the service medals she was awarded the Order of St.Sara, and received two other decorations. The bride travelled from Vancouver, B.C., to Seccondee to meet her fiancé, who had come down from “up country”.

The bridegroom, who is a Scout Commissioner, served in France during the war, and was awarded the M.C. and bar.

He is a vice-president of the Gateshead Congregational Harriers, with which club and amateur athletics generally on Tyneside, he has a connection extending over 16 years.

After the wedding the pair travelled to Yendi, Togoland, a later German possession, where Capt. Hendrie is in charge of the Government Trade School – the first of its kind on the Gold Coast.
