William O'Brien was born in Gateshead on the 16th May 1887, he was the eldest son of Edward O'Brien, of 47 Blandford Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Labourer and his wife Ann, daughter of the late Patrick Heaney.
He was educated at St Joseph's School and was a plasterer by trade.
William enlisted on the 24th August 1914. His unit was sent to the Dardenelles and arrived there on the 3rd June 1915. He was badly wounded and died from his wounds on the 8th August 1915.
