In Gateshead (Saltwell) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 27779 Colour Serjeant James Madden serving with the 1st Garrison Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry who died 05/09/1918.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
James
Beloved husband of Ellenor Madden
Who died Sept. 5th 1918 Aged 60 years
Ellenor wife of the above died May 30th 1947
William son of the above
died Feb. 18th 1955 aged 56 years

At Rest

also Esther Elizabeth
dearly loved wife of Thomas William
died 22nd April 1990
in her 80th year
