Bain, D., Captain, awarded the Military Cross, 1920
Newcastle Daily Chronicle 16/04/1920 reports:

“Honours for Gateshead Brothers.

Captain Daniel Bain, son of the late Mr. D. Bain, F.C.S. of the United Alkali Company and of Mrs. Bain, of Denmark Street, Gateshead, has been decorated with the Military Cross by the Duke of Connaught.

In his youth, Captain Bain, who is an M.A. of Edinburgh University, was a member of the Durham Engineers in Alexandra Road. Joining the Royal Scots when he crossed the Border, he attained his present rank by good service during the war. For gallant conduct with his company in March, 1918, when against heavy odds they held a position for four days until relieved by the French, he came under the observation of General, now Field Marshall, Plumer, who recommended him for the Cross. Mr. Bain has resumed his scholastic duties in Glasgow, which had been interrupted for five years.

A younger brother, Mr. David Bain, B.Sc., has recently been appointed to an important post on the Government Geological Survey of South Nigeria, West Africa.”
