This entry refers to the top inscription for Pioneer Joseph William McCoy son of William and Mary Ann McCoy born 1891 at Gateshead died 1920. He was the brother of James William McCoy born 1883 died 1915.

There is also a family headstone for McCoy which reads:

In loving memory of
James William

Clearly this man died just after the outbreak of the Second World War. He was the son of Private James William (born 1883 died 1915) the son of William and Mary Ann McCoy. There is no CWGC entry and nothing to indicate he was a casualty of war.
