Lieut. J.G. Gargate
Lieut. J.G. Gargate, son of our highly respected Superintendent of Police, has been awarded the Military Cross. In October, 1915, he was given a commission in the DLI. He was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters. Before entering the Army he was clerk at the Durham County Constabulary, Durham, and prior to that a clerk under the Dunston Otto Coke Ovens Company at Consett. In congratulating Supt. Gargate at the Gateshead County Police Court, Sir Alfred Palmer, who presided, said he understood that the young officer was decorated on the field by his General, somewhere on the Somme, on April 15th, and he was sure it would give pleasure to those who had to do business in that court. There are many who endeavour all they possibly can to keep away from the court who will join Sir Alfred in his congratulations.
