Derek Johnstone has provided the following:
Thomas Dodds was born at Heworth, County Durham in 1890 to parents George Dodds, born in Newcastle and Mary Dodds from Barrington, a village near to Bedlington in Northumberland.
The Census in 1891 shows Thomas Dodds as John T Dodds living at Charlton Row, Felling, County Durham. At this time he was one year old.
In 1901, the Census records Thomas as George T Dodds living with his parents at Ivy Terrace, Heworth.
The 1911 Census registers Thomas, aged 21, single and working as a boot repairer, living in the family house at 2, Buller Street, Felling-on-Tyne. His siblings include William 30, Frances 19, Robert 17, James 14, Hypatia 11 and Sydney aged 9. His father‘s occupation was with a railway company.
Military records use the name Thomas Dodds. They confirm he was born at Heworth and he enlisted at Gateshead-on-Tyne. Thomas was formerly in the Cycle Corps with the service number 2021 (34 Division).
His effects went to his mother Mary indicating he did not marry; this document uses the incomplete service number 1672. His Pension Index Card identifies only his mother Mary but incorrectly lists his regiment as the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers with the service number 1672. In the CWGC documents the parents of Thomas Dodds are living at 12, Bullen Street, Felling-on-Tyne County Durham.
Thomas Dodds is remembered in Felling on F32.23
